Obituary

Johnson, Gary Keith - It is with sorrow that we announce the death of Gary Johnson on July 6, 2020. He passed suddenly and peacefully at home in Haileybury. He leaves behind his beloved wife of 31 years Carla, his daughters Jenny and Lisa (Cooney), his brother Richard (Sue) and his grandchildren Lucas, Jessica and Michael.

Gary was predeceased by his parents Kieth and Alida, sisters Terry (Lambe) and Lisa (Ouwerkerk). He is survived by his sister-in-law Janice Frey and brother in law Steven Frey (Tammy). He was a beloved Uncle Gary to James, Danny, Carmen, Sherry, Christina, Jason, Erin, Holly and Brent and a Grand Uncle to many.

His big heart, all embracing approach to life and his boisterous laugh endeared him to his family and friends. He passed on smiles to all those he would meet. He was a beloved volunteer member of Northern Star, a favorite of the students on his bus routes and as a local Santa Claus. He will be missed as the annual hunting camp cook, swim mate, joke teller at camp fires (singing Put Another Log on the Fire), great telephone conversationalist with his grandchildren, and constant singer of Joy to the World ( Jeremiah was a bullfrog, was a good friend of mine...) and a co-worker at Stock Transportation. He will be missed and remembered as a loving and devoted husband, father, Poppy, brother, and family member.

He always said that when the time came he wanted to be sent off with a marching band playing 'Going on up to the Spirit in the Sky' and fireworks. That pretty well defines him.

The family of the late Gary Johnson will receive family and friends at the Buffam Leveille Funeral Home on Thursday July 09, 2020 from 6:30 until 9:00pm. IN KEEPING WITH THE COVID-19 PROVINCIAL REGULATIONS, A TOTAL NUMBER OF 5 PEOPLE WILL BE PERMITTED IN THE FUNERAL HOME AT THE SAME TIME FOR A 15 MINUTE PERIOD. FUNERAL HOME STAFF MUST RECORD YOUR NAMES AND TIME THEREFORE PLEASE CALL THE FUNERAL HOME [705-672-3122] TO RESERVE YOUR ALLOTTED TIME. WE WILL INFORM YOU AS TO THE NEW VISITATION PROCEDURE. Memorial contributions can be made to Zack's Crib or to Northern Star Family Support Program [PO Box 249, New Liskeard, Ontario P0J 1P0]. Carla, Jen, and the rest of this wonderful clan… I am so sorry to hear of Gary‘s passing. I was shocked when I read that this morning on Facebook. I have incredibly fond memories of my best friend at camp for all those years, singing put another log on the fire every weekend, and I remember Jeremiah was a bullfrog! LOL he would sing at the top of his lungs for everyone to hear . While Carla would say shH Gary shH LOL! Priceless. And who could forget hooked on a feeling? Ooga Chaka Ooga Chaka Ooga Ooga Ooga Chaka LOL! The only friend I ever allowed to call me blind man! And I so cherished all the time we spent together at camp, shopping for Christmas in western New York, and visiting you in northern Ontario. Heaven gained an incredibly funny, loving, sympathetic, and genuine angel this week, and the world here lost a real gem. I’m going to miss my Christmas morning tradition of calling Gary to say happy birthday every year! I’m sorry we can’t cross the border to attend his wake. I would move heaven and earth to be there for you guys. With love, Ian Foley, Buffalo New York.

We are shocked and saddened by the sudden passing of a great friend. Gary was "larger than life"! We had the good fortune of having Gary's presence at our Deer Camp for many years and he certainly livened it up each and every year! You couldn't mistake his boisterous laugh and his zest for ensuring everyone enjoyed themselves to the fullest! He always told great stories-hunting trips were obviously a passion for him, and we got to hear no shortage of those! I always looked forward to hearing from Gary in early Autumn because I knew he was calling to talk about the meal planning for the deer hunt. Gary was a masterful chef!! All of us at the deer camp would rave at his ability to whip up fantastic meals-his latest favourite (and ours too) was tomahawk steaks. We truly had gourmet meals. I was afraid to tell my wife how well we ate at the deer camp for fear that I would have to try and repeat Gary's expertise in our kitchen! Gary fought his battles-we were so proud of his ability to shed the unwanted weight, to getting his knees replaced so he would have greater mobility. It was so encouraging to see him not in pain and to be smiling again! Gary was like a big brother and a father to us all-his heart was huge! Although he had a big "bark" there was no "bite". He was truly a "teddy bear"! Gary we will always remember your kind heart, your crazy jokes, your wonderful stories, your incredible cooking and your sincerity and genuine empathy for all those whose lives you touched. We will truly, truly miss you my dear friend.
